When a person adopts a dog and doesn’t know the dog’s birthday, the person sometimes celebrates the dog’s “gotcha day,” the day the dog was adopted. Even though we know Ace’s birthday is July 21, today is Ace’s gotcha day, and it is a special day to me because it is the day she came into my life. Two years ago, I brought home a little baby puppy after preparing for months to try to give her the best life I can. Looking back, I’m pleased with what I have been able to provide so far: all the playing, all the medical care, all the hikes, all the flights, all the healthy food and behavioral training and cuddly naps. And oh, what Ace has provided for me: love, frequent and bellyaching laughter, a deep breath and a calm in the middle of some really difficult times.
I mean, look at this freaking dog:
And we still have so much left to do. We haven’t been camping together yet! We need more hiking, and definitely there should be some more exploring of San Francisco. And think of all the friends Ace hasn’t met yet, all the random people on the street whose eyes bulge out of their heads with disbelief when they see her strutting and wiggling towards them. We have a lot of ground to cover.
Ace, thanks for the good times. I’m going to try to keep you entertained for as long as I can, little buddy.
